The third annual Victorian Archaeology Colloquium will be held next week at La Trobe University, an event that is fast becoming an unmissable date in the calendar for anybody with an interest in archaeology in Victoria.  The colloquium provides a forum for consultants, academics, government agencies, Aboriginal groups and students to voice ideas and share the results of their work over the preceding twelve months.

This year Ben Watson, Paul Kucera and Racheal Minos will be presenting papers. Racheal’s presentation “Investigations on a terrace at Deep Creek, Bulla” will share the results of a recent excavation that sought to determine whether there were deeply buried archaeological remains as evidence of early occupation of the area.

Ben and Paul had the opportunity to do some fascinating work in the far northwest of the state last year, and will present their findings in “Wallpolla 3: documenting a complex archaeological landscape in the Murray River Corridor, northwestern Victoria.”

Ben is also drawing on his interest in rock art and co-presenting a paper with Darren Griffin of Barengi Gadjin Land Council about the Sisters Rocks near Stawell, which is about changing heritage values of the site.

The day promises to be a very satisfying one, with many other interesting contributions by Victorian archaeologists. We very much look forward to seeing our friends and colleagues there!
